Sony PS4 hits 1 million UK sales

PS4
The Sony PS4 has reached 1 million sales in the UK, it's been confirmed.

Sony's latest console has been a world-wide runaway success, and that success has been reflected here in the local UK market.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony UK boss Fergal Gara revealed that the PS4 had passed the 1 million mark just nine months after going on sale here in the UK.

This makes the PS4 the second fastest-selling games console ever  for the country. The number one slot is occupied by the Nintendo Wii U, which hit 1 million sales in just 38 weeks.

Impressively, though, it means that the PS4 has beaten both the PS3 (46 weeks) and the massively popular PS2 (50 weeks) as well as the Xbox 360 (60 weeks).

Xbox One figures, meanwhile, are conspicuous by their absence, which probably means that they're well short of the PS4 at this particular point. Certainly external projections seem to bear that out.

Gara confirmed that PS4 sales were "significantly" ahead of projections, just in case that was in any doubt. He also doesn't foresee any ongoing supply issues ahead of the Christmas rush, which should ensure those figures get a nice end-of-year boost.

Another sales spike should accompany the launch of the PS4-Destiny bundle, which launches today.

Interestingly, Gara revealed that Sony only began to match demand for the PS4 in April - as sure a sign of its unexpected success as any.
