Report: Samsung to introduce premium-look midrange Galaxy A5

sm a500 galaxy a5 1
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus may be taking up headlines today, but nothing can stop Samsung from releasing new phones. SamMobile reports that a variant of the new Galaxy A series, the Galaxy A5, will be the second in the lineup of new “premium-ish” smartphones from the Korean company.
The Galaxy Alpha series was meant to showcase Samsung’s new design approach for smartphones. We had high hopes for this family of devices because the Alpha felt so premium compared to the rest of the Samsung smartphone family. The leaked Galaxy A5 will not sport a full-metal body like its Alpha counterpart, though it will be outfitted in a material that feels “cold in the hand,” according to SamMobile’s sources. The downgrade from metal may be to cut costs, as this is a mid-range phone.
sm a500 galaxy a5 6SAMMOBILE
The backside of the Galaxy A5 looks very similiar to the original Galaxy Alpha.
Inside, the Galaxy A5 may feature a 5-inch HD (720p) Super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera, 2330 mAh battery pack, 16GB of storage, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and an updated version of TouchWiz. It may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, too, which is used in a plethora of mid-range Android devices. At least it looks good.

The Galaxy A5 will have a variant of TouchWiz.
There’s no word on when the device will launch, or whether it will come to the U.S.

Missing Pieces: Oculus Rift rumors, Wasteland 2 arrives, and the rest of this week's must-know games news

xbox one pc
Hi there, and welcome to a very mobile episode of Missing Pieces! Today I am rolling down the highway on the way to this weekend's Oculus Connect conference, where we'll hopefully be hearing some exciting news about our cyberpunk future!
But in the meantime, this broadcast is brought to you by this bus's 56k modem. Here's all the most important gaming news for the week of September 15.

Consumer Oculus release rumors

I've been asking the same question of Oculus now for almost eighteen months: "Hey, so...when's that consumer version coming?" Oculus is still tight-lipped on the subject.
In the meantime, we've got rumors. Both TechRadar and VRFocus claim a beta of the consumer version (CV1) will roll out in mid-2015.

Harmonix still hasn't given up on Rock Band

Okay, at this point I think it's safe to say Harmonix is like that guy who has that super-obvious crush on that girl in high school and she likes him back but they just keep teasing each other and having "tickle fights" and all sorts of crap and you want to just scream " KISS HER ALREADY, HARMONIX. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" But then you would be insensitive.
Harmonix shut down Rock Band Network this week, which was its hosting service for community-created Rock Band songs. In the wake of the shutdown, Harmonix againreiterated, "Rock Band remains a huge part of the culture here at Harmonix, and there’s not a day that goes by where someone in the office isn’t talking about Rock Band, or planning for the future of the franchise."
Get a room, Harmonix.

We must protect this house

If you played Gone Home last year and thought "Well, this is a nice map but there just isn't enough murder to satiate my ever-present rage," first of all you might want to check out an anger management program.
But if the doctors say, "I'm sorry, there's no saving you," then you might as well check out this Counter-Strike: GO map a modder made, which faithfully recreates Gone Home's 90s Portland nostalgia.

Say my name, say my name

Take a moment and think back: How long has it been since you last logged into World of WarCraft?
If the answer is "Prior to November 13, 2008" (a.k.a. the week Slumdog Millionaire andQuantum of Solace were released) then quick! Log in to World of WarCraft! Otherwise Blizzard may steal your character name !
Oh, what's that? You don't care? Well, don't say I didn't warn you.

Repackage and resell

xbox one pc
In November you'll finally be able to purchase the "Xbox One Controller + Cable for Windows" according to a new Microsoft product page.
Dirty little secret: You could literally plug your existing off-the-shelf Xbox One controllerinto your PC right this moment with any MicroUSB cable and get the exact same experience, and there's still no wireless Xbox One PC solution.
Considering how prevalent the Xbox 360 controller is with PCs, it's astounding how much Microsoft has dropped the ball on this.

EA in Pamplona

Did you know EA delayed Battlefield: Hardline so it could add "more innovation"? That's what CEO Andrew Wilson said at GamesBeat this week!
Oh man! I can't wait to see what results from having "more than zero" innovation in the game!
Good news: You don't even have to wait. You can check out this new trailer for the "Hotwire" multiplayer mode, where you score points by driving a car around while the other team tries to shoot you and what the heck am I even writing am I having a stroke?

I scream for ice cream

And finally, combating this week's batch of cynical punches to the face is Marin County, which is offering to buy back your violent video games and toy guns on Saturdays in October in exchange for—I swear I'm not making this up—Ben & Jerry's ice cream. "What do these fat gaming kids enjoy more than games?" they asked. "Oh yeah, ice cream."
The question now is, "How do I turn in my Steam library?"

More reading

We also have previews with a game (new Rollercoaster Tycoon!) and a piece of hardware (Logitech's new G910 Orion Spark mechanical keyboard), a modder turned an Xbox One into a "laptop" of sorts, Shadowrun's Dragonfall expansion got releasedas a standalone product, and we've got reviews of both Spacecom and Wasteland 2.
And if you're confused what games are still coming out in 2014, we've charted out therest of the year's release calendar.
Stay tuned this weekend to the site and to my Twitter feed for more Oculus news! Hopefully this'll be a big one. Otherwise I'm really going to regret this long bus ride.

Samsung launches free'My Knox' app for securing its latest smartphones

Samsung on Thursday announced price reductions and updates for its Knox security and management software for IT shops and a free My Knox service that is directly available to professionals using ActiveSync.
My Knox can be installed on a user’s Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Note 4 smartphone without an IT administrator’s involvement to set up a My Knox User Portal to remotely find, wipe and lock a device, according to a Samsung blog.
With My Knox, professionals can synchronize emails, calendar events and contacts between desktop computers and mobile devices, Samsung said. It creates a virtual Android partition within the mobile device that has its own home screen, launcher, apps and widget.
“If you are looking for a free security solution that ensures your privacy while providing the simplicity of having a secure workspace for email and apps that is managed by you, look no further than My Knox,” Samsung’s blog says.
Samsung also posted a separate blog that details its new Knox Premium and Knox Express services for IT admins to deploy cross-platform mobile security companywide.
Knox Premium for large enterprises will cost $1 per user, while Knox Express for small and medium businesses will be free. Cloud support for Knox tools had been priced as high as $3.60 per user, but Jae Shin, vice president of the Knox Business Group, recently said the price would soon go down.
“Knox Premium will be attractive to businesses because of its low cost and it will address concerns that Knox is expensive and not affordable,” said Shreyas Sadalgi, senior vice president of business development at Samsung Knox partner Centrify. He spoke in a recent interview.
Samsung described Knox Premium as a “complete mobility management solution” that includes Knox Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM), which is cloud based for easy deployment. It works across other device platforms besides Android, but Samsung didn’t say which ones. It also comes with online technical and phone ticket support.
Knox Express will also have Knox EMM, and will have an online portal for IT admins with support for Samsung and other Android and iOS devices, Samsung said.
Centrify provides the cloud-based identity and access management features of Knox EMM.

Oculus open-sources original Rift developer kit's firmware, schematics, and mechanics

Kicking off the Oculus Connect conference in Los Angeles this weekend, Oculus's Nirav Patel announced that the original Oculus Rift developer kit (DK1) is now fully open-source, with the exception of the pieces that aren't actually in production anymore—for instance, the display, which is no longer manufactured.
"We don't want everyone to have to take the same risks we took. We just want to share the things we learned so you don't have to do that. We're all in this to build virtual reality together," said Patel.
Those risks were the focus of Patel's talk, which discussed the manufacturing of the DK1. "We found just about the roughest and quickest contract manufacturer we could find in China," said Patel. "We were a ragtag group of ten people nobody had ever heard of trying to create a product nobody thought was possible."
He discussed the different challenges the team encountered trying to get the original Oculus out the door, such as the trip where they spent hours rubbing different foam materials on their face to find one that was comfortable enough for prolonged use.
Or the last-minute panel change that almost screwed the project—"We initially started with this 5.6 inch panel in the Rift," said Patel, "But ultimately that thing ended up being end-of-lifed before we could get our hands on them, so we had this mad rush to switch to this 7" panel which resulted in this big lunchbox thing."
As a result, the DK1 had all sorts of underutilized screen real estate hidden behind the lenses, but it was a compromise the Oculus team had to make to get the product out the door. Other things Patel acknowledged were ill-planned: The removable eye lenses that let dust in, the weird adjustment slots on the side that needed a coin or screwdriver to turn, et cetera.
But with the DK2 out, Oculus decided it was time to put out the DK1 to the community. And they really mean the community. Many of the files would require high-end equipment that most people won't have access to, so Oculus is hoping the community will come together to make some easy 3D printable files and the like.
The files are out there, though, if you want them. "Really we're more interested in seeing what people do with the individual components," said Patel. He said an enterprising person could even make low-latency trackers based off Oculus's design and sell them to interested people—the licenses are that open.
And, of course, "There's also the CAD for the carrying case if you want a cool fashion accessory."
As for when the DK2 will go open source? Patel's keeping quiet for now. "Even opening the DK1 was a debate we had internally for the last year or so," he said. Fingers crossed, DIY community.

Toshiba shifting away from consumer PCs

Toshiba
Toshiba has revealed its intention to shift its focus away from the consumer PC market.

The Japanese hardware manufacturer has announced that it will "accelerate the restructuring of its PC business" to focus on the business market.

This means that the company will release less consumer-focused PC hardware, which is sees as "volatile and over-dependent on sales scale and volume."

Indeed, Toshiba has revealed that it will withdraw from certain unprofitable consumer PC markets altogether, dropping its number of sales bases by more than half.

As part of this sweeping plan, Toshiba will relocate some of its PC head office functions outside of Japan, and will shed around 900 JOBS - that's more than 20 percent of its non-manufacturing PC workforce.

This is all part of a long-term cost-cutting plan that has seen Toshiba return to profitability in recent times. The company notes that "as a result of measures initiated last year, the PC business reported positive operating income in the first quarter of this fiscal year."

However, it also observes that "the PC market is expected to see a continuing trend to modest growth rates, and these transformation measures are necessary to support the business in securing consistent profit."

Flatlining computer sales have affected the wider PC market in recent years. Last year, Dell experience a huge drop in profits, resulting in the company being bought back by founder Michael Dell. HP has also struggled in recent years, while earlier this year Sony sold its VAIO laptop arm.

Samsung’s iPhone 6 Plus jibes prove it still fears Apple

Galaxy Note 4
Opinion: When you’re number one, you don’t waste your energy mouthing off about number two because it’s rather unbecoming.
Instead you crow about your supremacy to anyone who will listen, while acting like the competition doesn’t exist.

Unless you’re Samsung, that is.

The Korean company’s unhealthy obsession with Apple continued this week with a series of ads that are, in theory, designed to promote the Galaxy Note 4. Except they’re not. In at least one of the TV spots, the Note 4 is not mentioned until the last few seconds. In reality, they are designed to troll Apple.

In the build up to the iPhone 6 Plus release this week, Samsung has gone to huge lengths to ensure everyone knows they’ve been “excelling at phablets for years,” while Apple is the Jonny-Ive-Come-Lately.

In another commercial aired in the United States, the firm rips into the hypocrisy of some in the technology media for calling the original Galaxy Note “an unwieldy beast,” in 2011, while heralding Apple’s “imitation” in 2014. That’s fair enough, but tastes and trends change.

iPhone 6 Plus teardown reveals 2,915 mAh battery, nearly double iPhone 5S

iPhone 6 Plus Teardown
Smartphone repair experts iFixit have revealed that the new iPhone 6 Plus carries a 2,916mAh battery.
iFixit, who routinely take apart every big new tech product, discovered during its iPhone 6 Plus teardown that the 5.5-inch phone is rated at 3.82 V and 11.1 Wh of energy, which equates to 2,915 mAh.

This puts the iPhone 6 Plus battery capacity at nearly double the 1,560 mAh of the iPhone 5S. The Samsung Galaxy S5, meanwhile, clocks in at 2,800 mAh. That's slightly less, but then the Samsung has a smaller screen, too.

A more interesting comparison is the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which the iPhone 6 Plus arguably aims to usurp in the battle of the gigantaphones. The Note 4 has an even larger 3,220 mAh battery. This should give it an advantage, though that doesn't take into account the variables of the two operating systems.

The iPhone 6, for the record, has a middling 1,810 mAh battery. Ho hum.

In further news, iFixit was pleasantly surprised by the repairability of the iPhone 6 Plus, awarding it a 'respectable' seven out of 10.

In its testing notes it said that while removing screen requires a "propriety screwdriver and knowledge of adhesive removal", it isn't hard to accomplish. It also praised the relocating of the fingerprint sensor cable, which makes the iPhone 6 Plus easier to repair than the 5S.

Sony: ‘We’ve been a leader in experimenting with smartphone colours’

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Sony is still a relatively small player in the smartphone space, but the company has claimed it has had a big impact on at least one area of the market.

According to Thomas Waldner, Senior Design Manager at Sony Mobile Communications, Sony has been a pioneer in pushing the smartphone space beyond the tradition of drab black and white handsets.

When it comes to smartphones, we’ve been a leader in experimenting with colours,” Waldner said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently.

While the likes of Apple, Samsung and HTC were persisting with monochrome handsets, Sony, with the likes of the Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact was experimenting with purple and yellow devices.

Although the company might not have a colour pallet as vibrant as that of the now Microsoft-owned Nokia Lumia line, Waldner believes Sony has helped make networks and retailers more open to a variety of handset colours.

“When we came out with the purple Z, operators were like ‘this doesn’t sound like a good idea to us, everyone buys black and silver’,” he told us.

“We pushed them and some were more adventurous than others, but when they put them on the market they sold really well.”

Speaking alongside the introduction of the Z3, he added: “Then we redid that and now we are expanding those colour options beyond the high-end.”

With the smartphone space becoming increasingly vibrant, the latest wave of high-end handsets are following the trend.

There will be four Samsung Galaxy Note 4 colours available at launch next month, while today three iPhone 6 colours were introduced.

EE to honour the iPhone 6 pre-orders Phones 4U cancelled

iPhone 6
The UK’s largest 4G network EE has pledged to fulfil the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders made through bankrupt retailer Phones 4U.

The third-party retailer went into administration earlier this week after EE decided to ditch its partnership with the firm.

The collapse meant Phones 4U would be unable to fulfill pre-orders for the new Apple smartphones made just a few days earlier.

Assuming EE feels a little culpability for the situation, the network has stepped in and said anyone had ordered an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus on through EE will be able to pick it up from EE retail locations around the UK on Friday.

The network assured Engadget it had reserved enough devices to account for the pre-orders, but the devices will be spread out across its UK outlets.

Visitors who bring along the Phones 4U pre-order confirmation will be able to get an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, but will have to sign up for an EE contract directly, rather than keep the rate they were getting through Phones 4U.

There’s currently no news from other networks who’s customers who have been hit by the high street retailer’s collapse.

Phones 4U has vowed to refund all customers who had pre-ordered the devices, although that'll be scant consolation to those now facing a wait to get their hands on the new models.

Nokia 130 Nokia 130, an Ultra Affordable Phone, Now Available in Pakistan
Microsoft Devices today announced the availability of Nokia 130 in Pakistan, a feature phone aimed at first time phone buyers and those who want to keep a solid back-up phone for their communication needs.
Priced at just PKR 2,850, the Nokia 130 combines the everyday essentials first-time mobile phone buyers expect:  a handy device with reliability and mobile entertainment they want.

The Nokia 130 is an ideal handset for first-time mobile phone buyers, or for people seeking a reliable back-up phone to complement their existing smartphone. It’s built to last battery life of 26 days’ standby for the Dual SIM device.
Considering that more than 300 million people buy phones from this price category alone, Nokia 130 is aimed for a relatively huge audience.
“As demand in the affordable mobile segment continues to grow, Microsoft remains committed to delivering market-leading mobile innovation at each and every price point,” said Kamran Masood Niazi, Communications Manager, Microsoft Devices Pakistan.
He further added that: “Billions of people have yet to experience a mobile phone, while at the same time there is increasing demand for reliable back-up phones in both mature and high-growth markets. Nvidia Shield Tablet 32GB LTE version now available for pre-order

Nvidia Shield Tablet
The Nvidia Shield impressed us in our review for its hardware capabilities, though 16GB of storage may be rather limiting for anyone looking to load it up with games.
A 32GB model that includes LTE connectivity is now up for preorder on the Nvidia site, setting you back $399.
The unlocked version will work on AT&T and T-Mobile networks here in the U.S. A subsidized AT&T variant is to appear at some point in the future for $299 with the obligatory contract.
The devices are to ship out by September 30, so there is still some wait time before you begin blasting enemies. Speaking of which, the Shield ships with Trine 2: Complete Story, Twitch, and productivity apps like Evernote in case you need a break from gaming.
If the 32GB isn't enough, the Shield has an SD slot for moving supported apps to external storage.
The company also announced three new games optimized for the Shield's Tegra K1 chip: Beach Buggy RacingBombSquad, and Broadsword: Age of Chivalry.

Toshiba slashes struggling PC division to focus on business

Toshiba Satellite P50t
In another sign of the decline of the PC, Toshiba is cutting its PC workforce by about 900 people and sales bases by more than half.
The manufacturer said Thursday it will step up restructuring of its struggling consumer PC operations to focus on sales to business clients.
Toshiba will withdraw from certain consumer markets but it would not specify which ones. It said it will cut its sales bases around the world from 32 to 13 during its 2014 fiscal year, which ends March 31.
It would not say which consumer models will survive the downsizing. Toshiba makes laptops such as the Portege, Kira and Satellite brands, including the first laptop with a 4K display, the P50T-BST2N01.
It’s also known for its popular Dynabook brand of PCs in Japan.
“The main reason is to secure consistent profit,” a Toshiba spokeswoman wrote in an email when asked about the reasons behind the move.
“Toshiba does not plan to withdraw from the PC business as there are cases in which technologies developed for PC have been transferred to different business areas.”
The PC business has enhanced the company’s brand, she added. Toshiba will thus emphasize its profitable enterprise PC business and expand its offerings including workstations and tablets.
The revised approach calls for growing business-to-business sales to over 50 percent of all sales in the company’s 2016 fiscal year. The company hopes to use its PC know-how in its IoT (Internet of Things) products and services in cloud, healthcare and home appliances.
Toshiba expects the PC restructuring will reduce fixed costs by more than ¥20 billion ($186 million).
Fifth-ranked Toshiba’s share of PC shipments in the U.S. grew to 6.1 percent in the April-June quarter, up from 5.4 percent a year earlier, according to data from IDC. It did not make the top five in worldwide shipments, which posted a 1.7 percent decline from a year earlier.
Toshiba reported that PC sales had “improved significantly” in the April-June quarter, with brisk demand in Japan. It recorded PC sales of ¥167.6 billion, up from ¥155.5 billion a year earlier, but still down from ¥175.7 billion in the same period during 2012.

For the low prices, the Fire HD tablets have strong hardware features. The tablets have quad-core processors, and front and rear cameras. The 6-inch screen can display images at 252 pixels-per-inch (ppi), while the 7-inch screen shows images at 216 ppi. Amazon also said the Fire HD tablets provide three times the graphics performance than Samsung’s entry-level Galaxy Tab 4 tablets, which have ARM’s basic Mali graphics.
The Fire HD tablets also have Gorilla Glass displays, which reduces the chances of screens cracking or getting scratches. The rugged screen is typically available on tablets above $200.
The budget tablets are available for preorder and will start shipping in October.

Amazon also announced a Fire OS 4 “Sangria,” which is based on Android 4.4, codenamed KitKat. Amazon has tuned the new OS for the newer range of Fire devices.
